Summary

Coverage validation previously checked only the first and last segment IDs. This PR compares the complete loaded ID sequence with the expected sequence, using the existing exclusion-aware next_target() logic.

Root cause

Correct endpoints allowed middle duplicates, reordered IDs and incorrect exclusion gaps to pass, contrary to the coverage invariant described in the code.

Changes

  • Build the expected sequence from the current cursor, skipping declared exclusion ranges.
  • Require exact equality with the loaded IDs.
  • Preserve the returned cursor, existing error message, batch hashes and chain format for valid runs.
  • Add regressions for a middle duplicate, reordered middle IDs and an incorrect excluded middle range.

Tests

  • Before the fix: python3 -m unittest tests.simple.test_ovl.CoverageTests — 10 tests, 3 expected failures (SystemExit not raised).
  • After the fix: same command — 10/10 passed.
  • python3 -m unittest tests.simple.test_ovl tests.simple.test_ovl_anchor tests.simple.test_ovl_model_binding tests.simple.test_ovl_weights_verdict tests.simple.test_simple_verify -q — 62/62 passed.

Scope: 2 files, +20/-6. Based on upstream f42508c. Implementation commit 9010d41.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Batch validation now catches repeated or out-of-order items, skipped items, and items that should have been excluded. Invalid batches are rejected, helping ensure that processing covers the expected items completely and in the correct sequence, rather than passing validation based only on matching endpoints.

Walkthrough

The step coverage check now compares each target ID with the expected consecutive sequence, using next_target to skip excluded ranges. It exits with a coverage error for empty or mismatched batches. Three regression tests cover duplicate, reordered, and invalid excluded-middle IDs.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 9010d

The coverage check now rejects duplicated or reordered middle IDs and wrong excluded ranges. Forks that exclude very many pages could see noticeably slower training and replay, so the exclusion lookup should be made cheaper. This only matters at large exclusion counts and does not block merge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Validate the complete coverage sequence during training" matches the main change. The PR changes coverage validation in simple/ovl.py so that step compares the full loaded segment-ID sequence with the expected consecutive sequence, using next_target() to account for exclusion ranges. The added tests in tests/simple/test_ovl.py cover duplicate, reordered, and excluded middle-ID cases. The title is specific and concise. It names the validation scope, but it does not name the exclusion-aware logic or the change from endpoint-only checks. Those details are optional for a title.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #300 requires exact coverage validation for middle duplicates, reordered IDs, and incorrect exclusion gaps. simple/ovl.py now builds the full expected sequence from ctl["cursor"] with next_target() and compares it with all masked IDs. The code preserves the existing coverage error, returns last + 1, and leaves batch hashing and chain handling unchanged. tests/simple/test_ovl.py adds the three requested regressions and covers valid exclusion behavior. The reported focused and verifier suites pass.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The change is limited to simple/ovl.py and its focused tests. The implementation supports issue #300, and the added tests verify the required coverage behavior. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated files are changed.

Avoid rescanning all exclusions for each target.

The 16-million-check estimate is accurate for a full 32 × 512 batch and 1,000 exclusion ranges. The changed code performs this work once per update in Python, while the previous implementation scanned the ranges only once per batch. A fork with many excluded pages can therefore add substantial overhead to training and replay.

Walk the sorted ranges once per batch, or maintain a range index while checking the IDs so passed ranges are not rescanned.
