Walkthrough

SeedVR2 encode and decode now use memory estimates to select whole-pass or sliced execution, with compiled cache scopes and configurable frame chunks. The pull request adds Tencent Hy and Pika API nodes, updates server feature-flag defaults and merging, adds a VAE-related execution error tip, and updates two pinned package versions.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 48c80

The release is mergeable with bounded follow-up: direct SeedVR2 wrapper callers need a patcher fallback, discarded VAE clones retain their patcher, and Tencent requests have reduced transient-failure recovery. Ordinary VAE construction avoids the direct-call failure.

Cover the reserve and headroom terms in the planner test.

_plan pins the reserve to 0 and the headroom to 1.0. With those values, the budget (free - reserve) * headroom - working reduces to free - working. Removing either term then leaves all nine planner cases unchanged. Add reserve and headroom parameters, and add two cases where each term changes the slice count.

Suggested fix

Update the test helper _plan to accept reserve and headroom parameters and use
them when patching extra_reserved_memory and SEEDVR2_SLICE_MEM_HEADROOM. Add
planner cases that independently vary each term and verify it changes the
resulting slice count, while preserving the existing cases.

391-393: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a compiled packed-tail case to the slice comparison.

run builds every cache as Unpacked, and Unpacked._packable returns False. With compiled=True, __setitem__ clones each tail and never packs it. The comparison therefore never covers packed tails in compiled mode.

The buffered conv path produces channels-last tails on CUDA, so _AlwaysPackedCache packs them across slices. Add a packed comparison that checks the compiled packed run against the non-compiled packed run:

Suggested fix

- def run(fn, data, slices, **cache):
- with patch.object(vae_mod, "_plan_pass", lambda *a: (slices, Unpacked(**cache))):
+ def run(fn, data, slices, cache_cls=Unpacked, **cache):
+ with patch.object(vae_mod, "_plan_pass", lambda *a: (slices, cache_cls(**cache))):
             return fn(data).float()
             torch.testing.assert_close(run(fn, data, slices), reference, rtol=0, atol=1e-2)
             torch.testing.assert_close(run(fn, data, slices, compiled=True), reference, rtol=0, atol=1e-2)
+ packed = run(fn, data, slices, cache_cls=_AlwaysPackedCache)
+ torch.testing.assert_close(run(fn, data, slices, cache_cls=_AlwaysPackedCache, compiled=True), packed, rtol=0, atol=1e-2)

This case does not activate pause_malloc_graph(), because no malloc graph is recording in this test. It covers packed storage in compiled mode, not the pause.

417-417: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert that the compiled runs reach the slice graph transitions.

The compiled=True runs check only numerical equality. If comfy/ldm/seedvr/vae.py omits its malloc_graph_scope or prefetch_queue_pop calls, the result does not change, so the test cannot detect the omission. Wrap both functions in spies around the loop, then assert that the compiled runs call them.

A per-run assertion does not hold. slicing_encode with 4 slices takes the single-split early return, so it never reaches scope or next_slice. The check below runs across all compiled runs instead. It goes through vae_mod.comfy because the test module does not bind comfy.

Update the compiled-run test loop around `run` to spy on `malloc_graph_scope`

after the full loop that both spies were called. Keep the assertion across all

preserve the existing numerical-equivalence checks.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

validate_string checks a stripped local copy, but the node submits the original prompt. Consequently, the configured length check can pass while the actual request exceeds the provider's raw string limit; the same pattern appears in the other Pika text fields.

A locally validated request may be rejected remotely for excessive prompt length instead of generating from the usable trimmed prompt.

This can occur when: Submit an 8000-character text-to-video prompt with additional surrounding whitespace.

Learning: When implementing ComfyUI API nodes in this repo, for any billable HTTP POST operations, follow the established policy: keep the existing default retry behavior. Do not add idempotency keys or disable retries. The rationale is to prevent failures from aborting the entire workflow; when reviewing new API nodes, check that POST billing requests preserve the default retry configuration and remain consistent with this policy.

Learning: When consuming dictionaries produced by IO.Autogrow.Type, rely on their iteration order to match the configured template-slot order. This ordering is preserved by _expand_schema_for_dynamic, parse_class_inputs, and build_nested_inputs, so consumers should iterate the dictionary directly when processing dynamic slots.

  • partner_node_token directly gates frontend partner-node token behavior; the frontend reads the server-provided flag strictly. Enabling the backend default will activate this path for compatible sessions. [::Comfy-Org/ComfyUI_frontend::src/composables/useFeatureFlags.ts:194-199]
  • local_web_sso gates browser sign-in for local instances. When enabled, the frontend starts SSO only on loopback hosts; cloud deployments remain disabled. Restore the default retry budget for this billable request.

sync_op passes max_retries directly to sync_op_raw, and the ordinary retry gate covers 408, 500, 502, 503, and 504 responses and connection errors. With max_retries=1, two consecutive transient failures end the node. The default of 3 allows three retries. Rate-limit responses use a separate budget, so they are unaffected.

If the single retry is intentional, for example to limit repeated submissions of a billable call after a lost connection, add a comment at this call that states the reason.

Guard the current_patcher dereference in the slicing methods.

slicing_encode and slicing_decode call self.current_patcher.get_free_memory() without a None check. The attribute defaults to None, and only comfy.sd.VAE sets it. Direct wrapper use of encode, decode, or the tiled methods raises AttributeError. Fall back to a device memory query when it is None.

Update slicing_encode and slicing_decode to check whether self.current_patcher
is set before calling get_free_memory; when it is None, use the existing device
memory query instead. Preserve the current_patcher memory path when available,
and apply the same fallback to both slicing methods.

Clear the shared VAE reference when a clone is discarded.

VAE.clone repoints first_stage_model.current_patcher to the clone's patcher. No VAE path clears or restores that reference, so a discarded clone's patcher, and any patches added to it, stay reachable from the shared module until another patcher on that module runs pre_run or cleanup. Retention only happens when clone-specific patches are added. The current in-repo VAE clone consumers add none.

No safe localized edit is established. Clearing the reference needs a release hook for the clone, or a weak reference. The SeedVR2 planner reads current_patcher.get_free_memory, so either change needs a design decision.

Review comment at @comfy/sd.py at line 1181:
Address the shared-module reference assigned by VAE.clone by establishing a safe
lifecycle mechanism that releases or restores current_patcher when a clone is
discarded, while preserving the SeedVR2 planner’s get_free_memory behavior.
Determine the appropriate release or weak-reference design before changing the
assignment; do not add an unconditional clear without confirming it will not
disrupt other patcher users.
