The Internet of Things (IoT) is experiencing rapid expansion, bringing forth significant issues concerning data reliability and system transparency. The prevalent centralized architectures exacerbate these problems, leading to fragmented data ecosystems, hindering interoperability, and obscuring data handling processes, ultimately undermining the trustworthiness and utility of IoT applications. Recognizing the potential of vast IoT data in enabling robust decision-making, there's a clear demand for a decentralized "Global IoT Market." This market would empower users with transparent access to trustworthy data and facilitate seamless device integration for data contribution and monetization. Use cases, such as smart insurance leveraging reliable sensor data for automated contract execution via secure and fraud-proof blockchain technology, underscore this need.
Building upon our previous work [1] towards a global IoT market, which initially proposed a distributed Oracle network with a relay chain for storing partial computations, we identified limitations in scalability and potential bottlenecks related to data acquisition rates and costs. The reliance on a single blockchain's consensus mechanism also posed long-term scalability challenges, necessitating a more flexible architecture.
To address these limitations, we introduce ZONIA-MC (a Multi-Chain Zero-Trust Oracle System for Blockchain IoT Applications). ZONIA-MC enables end-users to request sensor measurements on any EVM-compatible blockchain where the corresponding smart contract is deployed. A dynamically elected Oracle committee acts as a blockchain gateway, intelligently processing requests by selecting appropriate data sources and their aggregators based on their established reputations. Our design incorporates distributed algorithms to ensure that shared records, including query responses and reputation scores, are seamlessly accessible from any connected blockchain. This multi-chain approach enhances scalability, reduces potential bottlenecks, and fosters a more robust and decentralized ecosystem for blockchain-based IoT applications.
This repository host three core components of ZONIA-MC ecosystem:
- Protocol
- Oracle
- SDK
Moreover, it provides a demo folder to start and test a local example of a ZONIA-MC deployment. See the related README.md file to run the example network.
