[FEATURE] Conditional HTTP GET for Blacklist Downloads (ETag / Last-Modified) #3282 - #3283
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Pull request overview
This PR implements conditional HTTP GET support (via ETag / Last-Modified headers) for the blacklist download job in BunkerWeb. Instead of performing a full download on every job run after the 1-hour TTL expires, the job now sends If-None-Match or If-Modified-Since headers to allow servers to respond with a lightweight 304 Not Modified. A HEAD-request-based Content-Length comparison is included as a last-resort fallback when neither ETag nor Last-Modified are available. The feature reduces bandwidth, CPU load, and load on upstream list providers.
Changes:
New parse_http_metadata() helper to extract ETag, Last-Modified, and Content-Length from cached file headers.
New build_cache_header() helper to persist HTTP metadata (ETag, Last-Modified, Content-Length) in the cache file's comment header block.
Updated download loop to send conditional GET headers, handle 304 responses by refreshing the cache timestamp, and fall back to a HEAD request + Content-Length comparison when no standard validators are present. Also upgrades several log calls from warning to error where appropriate.

Applicability reference: tests/AGENTS.md: # AGENTS.md Root: [quick guide](../AGENTS.md#fast-start) and [architecture](../ARCHITECTURE.md#architecture) Source excerpt: Python uses Black (160 char lines) and Flake8 with ignores defined in `.p...
The blacklist downloader stores ETag and Last-Modified in per-kind, per-URL cache files. It replays usable values as If-None-Match and If-Modified-Since. It rejects validators containing CR or LF. See blacklist-download.py:57–95, 249–254, 296–303.
When a response is 304 Not Modified and cached data exists, the job refreshes the cache timestamp and reuses cached entries. A 304 without cached data is treated as a failure. See blacklist-download.py:319–349.
The job retains a failed URL’s last cached entries. Its cache key uses SHA-256 of kind:url, which keeps entries transformed for different blacklist kinds separate. The job also removes unused legacy SHA-1 cache files. See blacklist-download.py:249–254, 389–392; coverage is in test_blacklist_conditional_download.py:207–223, 243–256.
Security impact: CR/LF checks prevent cached validators from adding request-header lines. The change does not alter blacklist-entry validation. See blacklist-download.py:57–62.
User-visible behaviour: Unchanged lists can use conditional requests and avoid downloading the response body again. Failed URLs can continue to contribute their last cached entries. The recap reports not-modified URLs. See blacklist-download.py:341–349, 389–392, 420–430.
Configuration or schema: No configuration or schema changes are indicated.
Packaging or deployment: No packaging or deployment changes are indicated.
Documentation and tests: No documentation changes are indicated. Unit tests were added for validator storage and replay, 304 handling, failure fallback, retries, legacy cache removal and cache separation by kind. Test execution results are unavailable.
Walkthrough
The blacklist downloader now uses cache keys based on list kind and URL. It sends conditional HTTP requests when cached validators are valid, reuses cached entries after a 304 response, and reports not-modified URLs separately.
Changes
Blacklist download caching
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Cache identity and metadata src/common/core/blacklist/jobs/blacklist-download.py, tests/unit/jobs/test_blacklist_conditional_download.py
Cache filenames use the SHA-256 hash of kind:url. The job parses valid ETag and Last-Modified values from cache headers and skips blank lines and comments when reading cached entries. Tests cover cache-key separation, same-URL list isolation, and removal of legacy SHA-1 cache files.
Conditional requests and response handling src/common/core/blacklist/jobs/blacklist-download.py, tests/unit/jobs/test_blacklist_conditional_download.py
The job sends available validators, reuses cached entries after a 304 response, and stores validated entries after a successful response. It closes responses and reports not-modified counts. Tests cover validator replay, changed content, unsolicited 304 responses, retries, and unusable validators.
Failure fallback and reporting src/common/core/blacklist/jobs/blacklist-download.py, tests/unit/jobs/test_blacklist_conditional_download.py
When a URL fails, the job retains its previous cached entries. Cache-deletion failures and other non-200 responses are logged at error level. Tests check failure fallback and independent processing of list kinds.
An unavailable blacklist source can be dropped from the active list during upgrade. Preserve the existing aggregate on partial failure before merging.

Explanation
The description repeats the title, "[FEATURE] Conditional HTTP GET for Blacklist Downloads (ETag / Last-Modified) #3282". It relates to the changeset because it names the feature, but it gives no detail on the cache key change, the 304 handling, or the tests. The check is lenient, so the description is related to the changeset and passes.
Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title is "[FEATURE] Conditional HTTP GET for Blacklist Downloads (ETag / Last-Modified) #3282". It names the main change: conditional HTTP GET for blacklist downloads using ETag and Last-Modified validators, which matches the raw summary. It uses a bracketed [FEATURE] prefix, not the Conventional Commits or '<component> - description' format required by the title requirements. The title is 83 characters, slightly over the roughly 80-character guideline, and the issue number is appended. These are format deviations, not unrelated content, so the title is partially aligned with the stated requirements.
Resolution
Rewrite the title in Conventional Commits or '<component> - description' format, for example: "feat: add conditional HTTP GET for blacklist downloads" or "blacklist - add ETag and Last-Modified conditional downloads". Keep it under about 80 characters and move the issue reference (#3282) into the description.

A validator rides the request, A 304 keeps entries at rest. New content fills the cache anew, Kind-specific keys keep lists true. Failed feeds leave prior lines in place, The recap counts each quiet case.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
With stream=True, requests opens the HTTP connection and does not download the body until you read it. The connection stays checked out until the body is consumed or you call resp.close().
304 and other non-200 statuses call resp.close(). A 200 assigns resp.iter_lines() and reads it later. If check_line or the loop raises, that exception is caught above and the streamed connection is never closed. Wrap the read in try/finally and close resp there.
The cache file treats everything before the first non-comment line as HTTP metadata. build_cache_header writes each validator as one comment line, and parse_http_metadata stops at the first line that does not start with # .
A 304 and a one-hour cache hit are recorded as the same event, and the 304 itself is logged only at debug level. At the default log level the conditional GET is invisible.

Reviewed changes
This run read the complete diff of PR #3283 against dev, plus the Job cache helpers in src/common/utils/jobs.py, Database.upsert_job_cache, and the blacklist.lua consumer.
Conditional request headers — new sanitize_validator / parse_http_metadata / build_cache_header helpers persist ETag and Last-Modified as #-prefixed cache header lines and replay them as If-None-Match / If-Modified-Since.
304 handling — a 304 Not Modified reuses the cached per-URL entries, re-saves them to refresh last_update so the existing 1-hour skip stays intact, and is reported via a new Not modified recap counter.
Cache parsing — all read paths (fresh cache, 304, download) now skip every #-prefixed line instead of assuming the header is a single line, which is required for the new multi-line header format.
Error handling / resource cleanup — streamed responses are closed on 200 (via finally), 304, and non-200; several cache-deletion and non-200 log calls moved from warning to error.
Verification (static only): python3 -m py_compile and ast.parse on the changed file pass; black/flake8 are not installed here, so no lint result is claimed. I confirmed in jobs.py / Database.upsert_job_cache that re-saving on 304 always refreshes last_update, and in blacklist.lua that the service-level {kind}.list (built only from unique_entries) cannot receive the new metadata comments. Fresh-cache and 304 reuse is equivalent to re-running check_line for the same kind because the per-URL file already stores processed entries; legacy # Downloaded from-only cache files parse to empty metadata and correctly fall through to a full GET. The implementation otherwise fully covers the linked issue (ETag/If-None-Match, Last-Modified/If-Modified-Since, comment-line storage, TTL refresh).
ℹ️ No test exercises the conditional-request or cache-header path
The new helpers (sanitize_validator, parse_http_metadata, build_cache_header) and the 304 branch are uncovered. tests/core/blacklist/main.py only asserts request blocking end-to-end and cannot produce a 304 without a controllable origin. The pure helpers are deterministic and cheap to unit-test: an ETag/Last-Modified round-trip through build_cache_header → parse_http_metadata, a newline-containing validator being dropped, and a legacy # Downloaded from-only file parsing to empty metadata. Without this, a future change to the header format would silently break conditional requests with no failing test.
Technical details
# Coverage gap for the new cache-header format## Affected sites-`src/common/core/blacklist/jobs/blacklist-download.py:56-86` — new pure helpers, untested
-`src/common/core/blacklist/jobs/blacklist-download.py:314-344` — new 304 reuse path, untested
## Required outcome- A regression in `parse_http_metadata` / `build_cache_header` (prefix lengths, newline rejection, legacy-format fallthrough) should fail a test rather than silently disabling conditional requests.
## Suggested approach (optional)- Add small unit assertions for the three helpers; the integration harness is not required to exercise `304`.
ℹ️ Nitpicks
resp is None at src/common/core/blacklist/jobs/blacklist-download.py:312 is unreachable: the retry loop either assigns resp and breaks or raises out of the enclosing try. Harmless, but dead.

337-349: Duplicate: the cache key still omits the blacklist kind.
A 304 still reuses data that check_line transformed for a previous kind, and cache_file refreshes last_update. An earlier review comment already covers this, so no new finding is raised here.
Add tests for conditional headers and 304 handling.
The existing tests only cover the one-hour cache skip. Cache.get_cache() returns the current time, so a second run does not send conditional headers. No test checks validator parsing, request headers, cached-entry reuse after 304, or the 304 failure path without cached data.
Add focused tests for sanitize_validator, parse_http_metadata, and build_cache_header. Cover weak ETags, values containing \r, missing validators, and header-only cache data. Add downloader-entrypoint tests with an old last_update that assert both conditional headers, cached-entry reuse, the not_modified recap, and failure for 304 without cached data.

Reviewed changes
This run re-reviewed the delta on PR #3283 since the prior pullfrog review (921b4df): the merge of upstream/dev into the feature branch (b5e4f68), which adapts the conditional-GET implementation to upstream's refactored list-parsing helpers. The feature behavior itself (ETag/Last-Modified persistence, conditional request headers, 304 reuse, TTL refresh) is unchanged.
Parsing delegated to shared helpers — the inline download loop now uses iter_list_entries / split_list_url from common_utils; file:// lists are read via Path.read_bytes() and the HTTP path reads resp.content, closing the response in a finally. This matches the parsing already present on dev, so no behavior is introduced beyond what the base branch already ships.
Conditional GET targets the download URL — get(download_url, ...) now strips the # JSON filter fragment (via split_list_url) before the request, which is the correct RFC behavior.
304 guard tightened — resp.status_code == 304 and old_cached_data; a 304 with nothing cached falls through to the non-200 failure branch (lines 315-326), which retires the prior inline concern about an unsolicited 304 silently dropping a URL.
Logging — the non-200 and cache-deletion paths emit at error; a new warning reports No valid <kind> entry with the response Content-Type.
Verification (static only): python3 -m py_compile src/common/core/blacklist/jobs/blacklist-download.py and an ast.parse of the same file both pass. No Docker/unit execution was run. I traced the merged paths against iter_list_entries/split_list_url in src/common/utils/common_utils.py:1086-1211 and confirmed the file://, HTTP 200, and 304 branches each define the values they consume.
Note: the earlier pullfrog inline thread on the 304/empty-cache case was addressed and has been resolved. Approval is left to the maintainers.

Reviewed changes
This run re-reviewed the delta on PR #3283 since the prior pullfrog review (b5e4f68) — commit 99bec92 ("fix open code reviews"), which retires the earlier findings (missing tests, dead resp is None branch) and the CodeRabbit cache-key concern.
Per-URL cache key namespaced by kind — url_file is now sha256(f"{kind}:{url}") instead of sha1(url), so entries already transformed by check_line for one kind can no longer be reused for another; legacy SHA-1 top-level *.list files are removed by the existing cleanup glob.
Retry loop made explicit — the dead resp = None / if resp is None: branch is gone; while retry_count < max_retries became while True, which leaves only by break or by re-raising on the final attempt.
New unit coverage — tests/unit/jobs/test_blacklist_conditional_download.py (9 tests) drives the job through the local HTTP fixture: validator round-trip and replay, 304 reuse plus TTL refresh, changed-validator re-download, unsolicited-304 failure, connection-refused retries, non-usable validators, kind-scoped cache names, and legacy SHA-1 cleanup.
Verification: ran the new file locally — python3 -m pytest tests/unit/jobs/test_blacklist_conditional_download.py -q → 9 passed; black --check and flake8 on both changed files pass. Docker / integration runtime not exercised. Approval left to the maintainers.

Reviewed changes
This run re-reviewed the delta on PR #3283 since the prior pullfrog review (99bec92) — commit c21aede ("keep a failed URL's last cached entries, extend conditional GET tests").
Shared cache-entry reader — the three inline loops that skipped #-prefixed header lines (fresh cache, 304 reuse, download) are replaced by a single iter_cached_entries helper; the skipped/fresh path also now reports skipped_urls.
Failed-URL retention — after the per-URL try/finally, a URL that failed this run now contributes its last cached per-URL entries to unique_entries, so a partial outage no longer drops that URL's entries from the rebuilt {kind}.list.
Extended unit tests — weak-ETag parameterization, a 304 on a header-only cache writing no list, and the failed-URL retention case (fresh entries from the healthy URL plus the failed URL's last good entries).
Verification: ran the new file with a local venv — /tmp/venv-unit/bin/python -m pytest tests/unit/jobs/test_blacklist_conditional_download.py -q → 12 passed; black --check --line-length 160 and flake8 on both changed files are clean. Docker/integration runtime not exercised. The retention block is read-only against the kind-scoped url_file cache and a per-(service, kind)unique_entries set, so no cross-kind or cross-service leak is reachable. Approval is left to the maintainers.
… kind fails, the same URL enters the if url in failed_urls branch for every later kind, so those kinds skip their own downloads and can retain stale cached entries. Store (kind, url) instead.

failed_urls keyed by (kind, url) — a failure while handling one kind no longer makes later kinds sharing the same URL skip their own download; the cached-entry retention block matches the same key, so a healthy kind still fetches and publishes its own list.
