papergames.io online multiplayer board-game platform with an embeddable games API (create a game

vendor domain is papergames.io. Hookdeck source type PAPERGAMES uses the STANDARD_WEBHOOKS
controller with headers_prefix 'svix' ("Delivered by Svix"). Headers svix-id (stable across
retries; idempotency key), svix-timestamp (seconds), svix-signature (space-delimited v1,<base64>;
accept any v1 entry, ignore other version tags, no v2 scheme). HMAC-SHA256 over
"<svix-id>.<svix-timestamp>.<raw body>", standard base64; key is the base64-decoded part after
whsec_ (whole value base64-decoded if unprefixed; reject an empty key). Examples verify manually
and name the svix npm/PyPI library as the alternative. No published timestamp tolerance: default
300 s, configurable via PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_TOLERANCE_SECONDS (0 disables), with the trade-off
against the retry schedule (immediately, 5 s, 5 min, 30 min, 2 h, 5 h, 10 h, 10 h). Body is
{eventType, payload}, not Standard Webhooks type/data. Only two documented events, game.started
and game.finished, both carrying the game session {uid, gamesPlayed, players[{externalId?, name,
score}], status, createdAt, updatedAt}. status stays "playing" on game.finished; no winner field
(compare scores); externalId only present when externalUserId was passed on the iframe URL. Docs
prose mentions a webhookPayload root wrapper that the JSON examples lack; tolerate both.
message.attempt.exhausted is Svix's operational event with no documented payload. No inbound
API key, bearer token, IP allowlist or handshake; endpoints are dashboard-managed only.

# Papergames Webhooks

[Papergames](https://papergames.io) is an online multiplayer board-game platform (Battleship, Tic Tac Toe, Connect 4, Gomoku, Chess) with an embeddable games API. You create a game session over the REST API, embed its `playUrl` / `watchUrl` in an iframe, and Papergames sends a webhook as each game in the session starts and finishes. Webhooks are delivered by **Svix** and signed with the `svix-` header prefix. (Not to be confused with Paperform, the form builder.)

## When to Use This Skill

- How do I receive Papergames webhooks?
- How do I verify a Papergames webhook signature (`svix-signature`)?
- Where do I find my Papergames webhook secret (`whsec_...`)?
- How do I handle `game.started` and `game.finished` events?
- How do I find the winner of a Papergames game, or map players to my own user IDs?
- Why is my Papergames webhook signature verification failing?

## Verification (core)

| Header | Value |
|--------|-------|
| `svix-id` | Unique message ID; the same on every retry, so it's your idempotency key |
| `svix-timestamp` | Unix seconds |
| `svix-signature` | Space-delimited `v1,<base64>` entries (more than one during secret rotation) |

Signed content is `{svix-id}.{svix-timestamp}.{raw body}`, HMAC-SHA256, standard base64. The key is the base64-**decoded** part of the secret after `whsec_`:

```javascript
const crypto = require('crypto');
// rawBody: exact request bytes (Buffer/string), NOT re-serialized JSON
function verifyPapergames(rawBody, headers, secret = process.env.PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_SECRET) {
const key = Buffer.from(secret.replace(/^whsec_/, ''), 'base64');
if (key.length === 0) throw new Error('Invalid PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_SECRET');
const expected = Buffer.from(crypto.createHmac('sha256', key)
.update(`${headers['svix-id']}.${headers['svix-timestamp']}.`).update(rawBody).digest('base64'));
return headers['svix-signature'].split(' ').some((entry) => {
const [version, sig] = entry.split(',', 2);
if (version !== 'v1' || !sig) return false; // ignore unknown version tags
const candidate = Buffer.from(sig);
return candidate.length === expected.length && crypto.timingSafeEqual(candidate, expected);
});
}
```

Also check `svix-timestamp` is a positive integer within your tolerance. Papergames publishes no number; the examples default to 5 minutes (the Svix libraries' default) and let you widen or disable it with `PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_TOLERANCE_SECONDS`, because a strict window can reject late retries or replays (see [references/verification.md](references/verification.md)). The official [`svix`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/svix) library (npm and PyPI) is a supported alternative, with a fixed 5-minute window. Read the raw body: `express.raw()`, `await request.text()` in Next.js, `await request.body()` in FastAPI.

> **For complete handlers with tests**, see [examples/express/](examples/express/), [examples/nextjs/](examples/nextjs/), [examples/fastapi/](examples/fastapi/).

## Payload Envelope

The body is Papergames' own envelope, **not** the Standard Webhooks `type` / `data` shape. Route on `body.eventType`; the game session is `body.payload`. There's no event-type header, so parse the body after verification:

```json
{
"eventType": "game.finished",
"payload": {
"createdAt": "2023-11-03T10:34:28.191Z",
"gamesPlayed": 1,
"players": [
{ "externalId": "PEP_001", "name": "Pepito", "score": 1 },
{ "externalId": "JD_001", "name": "John Doe", "score": 0 }
],
"status": "playing",
"uid": "8qgmUmqJj",
"updatedAt": "2023-11-03T10:34:57.484Z"
}
}
```

- `uid` is the game session ID returned when you created the session; use it to find your record.
- `externalId` is **your** user ID, present only if you passed `externalUserId` on the iframe URL. Fall back to `uid` + `name`.
- There's no `winner` field: compare `players[].score` on `game.finished`.
- `status` stays `"playing"` on `game.finished` (a session can hold several games), so don't use it to detect the end of a session.
- The docs' prose names the root `webhookPayload` while the JSON examples have no wrapper. The examples follow the JSON and also accept the envelope nested under `webhookPayload`.

## Common Event Types

| Event (`eventType`) | Fired when |
|---------------------|------------|
| `game.started` | A game within a game session starts (can fire several times per session) |
| `game.finished` | A game within a game session finishes (can fire several times per session) |

These are the only two documented events. Each endpoint subscribes to the events it chooses, and the list may grow, so acknowledge unknown types with `2xx`. After all retries fail, Svix sends a `message.attempt.exhausted` operational webhook. Papergames doesn't document its payload or which endpoint receives it. See [references/overview.md](references/overview.md).

## Delivery Semantics

Return `2xx` quickly and process asynchronously. Failed attempts are retried immediately, then after 5 s, 5 min, 30 min, 2 h, 5 h, 10 h and 10 h. Then the message is marked Failed, and an endpoint that fails for 5 days is disabled. Deduplicate on `svix-id`. Order isn't guaranteed, so key state on `uid` + `gamesPlayed`. The handlers return `400` for missing or invalid headers, a bad signature or invalid JSON, and `500` when the secret isn't configured. There's no handshake, no API-key or bearer auth on inbound requests, and no published IP allowlist.

## Environment Variables

```bash
PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_SECRET=whsec_xxxxx # full value, shown once after creating the endpoint
PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_TOLERANCE_SECONDS=300 # optional; 0 disables the timestamp check
```

## Local Development

```bash
# Express / Next.js (use 8000 for FastAPI). No install or account required.
npx hookdeck-cli listen 3000 papergames --path /webhooks/papergames
```

Register the printed URL in the Papergames developer tools at [papergames.io/en/developers/webhooks](https://papergames.io/en/developers/webhooks) under **webhook management** → **Create endpoint**. (API keys live at [/en/developers/apikeys](https://papergames.io/en/developers/apikeys); `developers.papergames.io` is the docs site, not the dashboard.)

# TODO - Known Issues and Improvements

*Last updated: 2026-11-05*

These items were identified during automated review but are acceptable for merge.
Contributions to address these items are welcome.

## Issues

### Major

- [ ] **skills/papergames-webhooks/references/setup.md**: Setup says to 'Sign in to the developer tools at developers.papergames.io' and lists the developer account as being at developers.papergames.io (lines 7 and 13). developers.papergames.io is the docs site. The official Getting Started page puts the developer tools (API keys, webhook management) at papergames.io: https://papergames.io/en/developers/apikeys, with webhooks under /en/developers/webhooks. The Express, Next.js and FastAPI READMEs repeat the same claim (lines 12 and 58/60).
- Suggested fix: In setup.md, point Prerequisites and step 1 to the developer tools at https://papergames.io/en/developers/apikeys (register with email or social login), and say webhook management is at https://papergames.io/en/developers/webhooks. Keep developers.papergames.io as the documentation link only. Make the same change in examples/{express,nextjs,fastapi}/README.md.

### Minor

- [ ] **skills/papergames-webhooks/examples/nextjs/README.md**: Copy-paste wording: the Next.js and Express READMEs say the handler verifies 'by hand with Node/Python built-ins', but each example uses only one language. The FastAPI README has the same wording.
- Suggested fix: Say 'with Node's built-in crypto module' in the Express and Next.js READMEs and 'with Python's hmac/hashlib' in the FastAPI README.

## Suggestions

- [ ] Express uses express.raw({ type: '*/*' }) rather than the conventional { type: 'application/json' }. This is deliberate, covered by a test and explained in verification.md, so no change is needed. Mention it in a short code comment so reviewers don't 'fix' it back.
- [ ] The Express handler would return 500 if players[] contained a null entry (playerLabel reads player.externalId), while FastAPI filters out non-dict entries. Optionally add players.filter((p) => p && typeof p === 'object') in Express and Next.js for consistency.
- [ ] vitest prints an ESM-in-CommonJS warning for vitest.config.ts. Renaming it to vitest.config.mts or adding "type": "module" to the Next.js package.json would silence it.

# Papergames Webhooks - Express Example

Minimal example of receiving Papergames webhooks with signature verification. Papergames delivers webhooks
through Svix, so the handler verifies the `svix-id`, `svix-timestamp` and `svix-signature` headers
(HMAC-SHA256, base64) by hand with Node's built-in `crypto` module. The official Svix library
([`svix`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/svix) on npm, [`svix`](https://pypi.org/project/svix/) on PyPI) is a
supported alternative.

## Prerequisites

- Node.js 18+
- A Papergames developer account (developer tools at https://papergames.io/en/developers/apikeys) with an API key and a webhook endpoint secret (`whsec_...`)

## Setup

1. Install dependencies:
```bash
npm install
```

2. Copy environment variables:
```bash
cp .env.example .env
```

3. Add your Papergames webhook secret to `.env` as `PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_SECRET`
(the full `whsec_...` value shown once after you create the endpoint).

## Run

```bash
npm start
```

Server runs on http://localhost:3000. Webhook endpoint:

```
POST http://localhost:3000/webhooks/papergames
```

## Test

```bash
npm test
```

The tests sign the documented `game.started` and `game.finished` payloads with the Svix algorithm
(`{svix-id}.{svix-timestamp}.{raw body}`, HMAC-SHA256, base64) and check a fixed signature vector.

## Receive Real Webhooks Locally

Start a tunnel with the Hookdeck CLI (no account required):

```bash
npx hookdeck-cli listen 3000 papergames --path /webhooks/papergames
```

1. In the Papergames developer tools (https://papergames.io/en/developers/webhooks), open **webhook management** for your API key,
click **Create endpoint**, paste the tunnel URL, and subscribe to `game.started` and `game.finished`.
2. Copy the webhook secret shown after creation into `.env` as `PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_SECRET` (it is shown once).
3. Create a game session (`POST /api/v2/game-session/player-vs-player`) and play a game through its `playUrl`.

## Event Handling

The body is `{ "eventType": "...", "payload": { ...game session... } }` (not the Standard Webhooks `type`/`data`
shape). The handler routes on `eventType`:

- `game.started` - a game within a session started (fires once per game, so several times per session)
- `game.finished` - a game within a session finished; there is no winner field, so the handler compares
`players[].score`

`status` stays `"playing"` on `game.finished`, so don't use it to detect the end of a session. `externalId` is only
present when you passed `externalUserId` on the iframe URL. Unknown event types are logged and acknowledged with 200.
Deduplicate on the `svix-id` header (stable across retries) and key state on `payload.uid` + `payload.gamesPlayed`.

## Timestamp Window

`PAPERGAMES_WEBHOOK_TOLERANCE_SECONDS` (default `300`, the Svix libraries' default; `0` disables) bounds the age of
`svix-timestamp`. Papergames publishes no tolerance and retries over roughly 27 hours, so widen it (or disable it and
rely on `svix-id` deduplication) if late retries or replays are rejected. See
[references/verification.md](../../references/verification.md).
