Adds an optional process-local final-frame admission hook for one preallocated-ID ordinary text DM. Nil keeps the existing path. Admission runs under the Noise write lock, immediately around the actual WebSocket write; the non-blocking entry notification is separate from the provider-ACK wait. Refusal consumes no nonce/header, and callbacks cannot invoke twice or after return.

This draft supports Polymorfa MR-E G3 only. No consumer, runtime mount, positive authority, migration or release is added. Guarded sends skip the retry content cache/store and disconnect-frame retry; an integrator must also exclude these IDs from its custom GetMessageForRetry fallback. Entered is evidence only, never provider acceptance. A durable invocation marker without an exact outcome stays unknown with the original identity and is never resent.

The branch is intentionally based on the API's exact dependency pin 29a4245 so its eventual dependency update contains only this patch, rather than 54 unrelated commits on main. The same patch also compiled and passed the full race suite on main b0e8e85 before backport. Main remains the publication branch; no tag/publication is requested.

Verification: full go test -race ./... passed on main with the hook; the full go test -race ./... also passed on exact dependency-base head ef4dd5f. Native tests cover revocation while waiting for the write lock, refusal preserving nonce/header, retained/repeated callback refusal, cancellation/closed socket, entry ordering and unsupported messages before preparation. No live WhatsApp/provider acceptance is claimed.

Six-part assessment:

  • API: updated optional internal dependency API; no HTTP/AMQP/public API changes or active callers.
  • SDKs: unaffected; this is an unmounted native runner dependency hook, no customer SDK contract changes.
  • CLI: unaffected; no command, credential or output changes.
  • Docs: updated engineering contract in docs/native-send-admission.md; no customer-visible behavior.
  • Feature releases: dark optional nil-default mechanism; activation remains blocked on MR-E/MR-I/D2 gates, no rollout/publication.
  • Admin controls: unaffected; no new persisted state, staff control or runtime mount. Regional CAS/result schema belongs to MR-I separately.

Cross-cutting: onboarding, tracking, billing/PAYG, Usage, Logs, audit and Analytics receive no new payload, state or behavior. This hook neither grants authority nor meters/bills. Application invocation/result receipts remain a separate gated dependency.

CI caught import grouping in three new files after build/tests passed. Applied the repository goimports -local convention at cd36c0e; the entire local pre-commit file check (imports, vet, tidy, whitespace, size and stringer) passes. CI is running on that successor.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional admission checks for supported one-to-one text messages. Sends require an assigned message ID and both admission and entry callbacks; unsupported message types or configurations are rejected.
    • Sends using this option are not retried after a disconnect response.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on supported sends, callback behavior, refusal handling, and retry and persistence constraints.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds an optional, process-local admission hook for preallocated-ID direct text messages. The send path validates supported requests and submits admitted frames through the native socket. The documentation describes callback constraints and states that no Campaign consumer, authority adapter, schema, or runtime mount is included.

Changes: Native Send Admission

Layer / File(s) Summary
Admitted socket writes
socket/framesocket.go, socket/native_admission.go, socket/native_admission_test.go
The socket path serializes admission, checks cancellation, and permits a single write callback. Tests cover refusal, callback reuse, cancellation, write-lock ordering, and entry timing.
Native text send integration
native_send.go, send.go, native_send_test.go, docs/native-send-admission.md
SendRequestExtra accepts hooks for supported preallocated-ID direct text sends. The hooks reach the admitted socket path. Native sends skip recent-message persistence and disconnect-frame retry. Tests check unsupported requests, and the documentation records hook constraints and exclusions.

Before adopting the new hook, keep per-send cancellation from disconnecting the shared socket and clarify that admission must not stall other writes. These issues should be resolved before merging.

P2 Badge Advance the nonce only when the frame can enter the socket

When an admitted payload's ciphertext is at least FrameMaxSize—for example, an oversized conversation—this increments writeCounter before sendFrame rejects the frame at its size check, without invoking Entered or sending any bytes. The peer therefore remains on the previous nonce while the next valid frame uses the incremented nonce and cannot be decrypted, effectively poisoning the live connection; perform the frame preflight before incrementing, or advance the counter only once socket entry begins.

P1 Badge Close admission before a retained callback can win the race

If Admit retains write, starts a goroutine, and returns, that goroutine can acquire mu in the scheduling window before this code sets active = false; the retained callback then sends successfully even though Admit has already returned. This violates the documented post-return closure guarantee and can let a frame escape after the caller's authority fence has been released, so completion of Admit and callback acceptance need to be serialized without this gap.

Use a deterministic lock-order assertion.

started is closed before SendFrameAdmitted is called. It does not prove that the goroutine reached the lock wait. A regression that calls admit before acquiring ns.writeLock can still pass when the goroutine runs after revoked.Store(true).

An unlocked flag and scheduler yields do not guarantee the required ordering. Add a separate assertion that checks lock ownership at admit entry. For example, in a test without a pre-held lock, ns.writeLock.TryLock() must fail inside admit; success means that admit ran before SendFrameAdmitted acquired the lock. Keep the current test for revocation after lock wait.

Keep Admit short while holding NoiseSocket.writeLock.

SendFrameAdmitted holds the write lock for the full synchronous Admit call. The current “before writing” guidance can permit a durable database or network operation inside Admit, which can delay other serialized outbound writes.

Clarify that Admit must be short and bounded, and must not wait on unbounded I/O. Do not require an in-memory-only fence or require every durable CAS to occur before SendMessage; the final authority fence and CAS implementation remain integration-owned.

Do not use the caller's ctx for the shared WebSocket write.

Line 38 passes the per-send ctx to conn.Write. SendFrame uses fs.cancelCtx instead. In coder/websocket, if the write context expires during a write, the library closes the whole connection. A cancelled or timed-out SendMessage context can therefore close the shared Noise socket while a frame is partly written. Every other in-flight IQ, receipt, and keepalive then fails, and the client must reconnect. This path also stops using fs.cancelCtx, so socket shutdown no longer controls this write.

Line 20 and line 33 already check ctx before entry. After entry, use the socket lifetime context. sendFrame(..., nil) falls back to fs.cancelCtx.
