Summary

Adds checkCrashRecovery to @statelyai/agent/testing, plus fixes for three durability bugs it found in the runtime.

Harness

For each crash point, the harness kills the run, resumes it from the store's log with a fresh runtime, and compares the result to an uninterrupted run. Crash points are:

  • after every log append;
  • while each effect (model call or plain actor) is in flight.

It reports:

  • reran: an effect re-ran after its completion was durable;
  • skipped: an effect never ran;
  • unexpected: an effect ran that the uninterrupted run never made;
  • request-changed: a re-executed call sent a different request;
  • outcome: the final state differs;
  • replay: the log no longer replays;
  • stuck: the resume never settles;
  • threw: the resume threw.

Model calls after a crash get the recorded answer from the uninterrupted run, with the same delay, so order-based fakes work. The store option takes a factory for checking your own store adapter. A write-behind store shows up as reran.

Runtime fixes

  1. A finished child is never reported after resume. If a child machine's last entry is durable but its parent's xstate.done.actor is not, the resumed parent waits forever. XState doesn't replay the transition that finished the child. The runtime now delivers the completion itself, at any depth.
  2. A parent's sendTo into a child is lost between appends. The same goes for the child's reply. Journal writes are now batched: one atomic append holds everything since the loop last waited. The batch's expectedIndex is its first index.
  3. A finished call could re-run after a crash. Its usage and its result were separate appends; a crash between them re-ran the call. They now land in one append. Usage counts real spend: a call that does re-run (in flight at the crash) reports its usage again. @agent.usage now carries callKey for attribution.

Sweep results

  • Examples (73): 72 pass.
    • customer-support and strangler-fig fail because their plain-actor fakes aren't idempotent, so re-running them changes the result. That's the documented at-least-once contract for plain actors.
    • generate-and-repair fails because its lastError depends on which parallel candidate finishes last.
  • Round-9 greenfield trial projects (5): 5/5 clean.

Needs a ruling

Usage counts real spend (ruling: tokens spent are tokens spent). No dedupe by callKey.

Checks

  • pnpm run check, docs:check and the src suite (1291 tests) all pass.
  • Each fix has a regression test, and each of those tests fails without its fix.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added crash-recovery testing that simulates crashes at log and effect checkpoints, resumes runs, and reports discrepancies.
    • Usage events can now include a call key to identify usage associated with a specific call.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved recovery of completed nested machines and preservation of parent-child messages and replies across crashes.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on crash-recovery testing, batched log writes, and how retries affect usage budgets.

…ound

- checkCrashRecovery kills a durable run after every log append and while
  every effect is in flight, resumes from the store, and checks the resume
  against an uninterrupted run.
- A child that finished just before a crash now reports to its parent on
  resume, at any depth.
- Journal writes are batched per settled step, so a parent's sendTo into a
  child (and the child's reply) land with their cause.
- @agent.usage carries callKey; a re-executed call's usage is counted once.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds checkCrashRecovery to the testing API and changes durable journal writes, restored-child completion delivery, and usage-event attribution. It adds tests and documentation for crash-and-resume checks and these runtime changes.

Changes: Durable run recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Batch durable journal writes
src/run-agent.ts, docs/event-log.md, .changeset/crash-recovery.md, src/crash-recovery.test.ts
The runtime buffers entries and appends them in ordered batches. It flushes at settled steps, barriers, and run completion. Tests cover parent-to-child messages and child replies.
Restore completed-child notifications
src/run-agent.ts, src/durable-child-state.test.ts, .changeset/crash-recovery.md
Restored children that have completed now deliver completion or error events to their parent, including at nested levels. Tests cover nested restoration and completion handling.
Include call keys in usage events
src/usage.ts, src/run-agent.ts, src/agent-usage-event.test.ts, src/verify-round9.test.ts, docs/usage-and-budgets.md, .changeset/crash-recovery.md
Usage events include the call key when available. Tests and documentation cover the field and usage reporting after a call re-executes.
Define and expose the crash-recovery check
src/crash-recovery.ts, src/testing/index.ts, docs/persistence.md, docs/verify.md, skills/build-machine/SKILL.md, .changeset/crash-recovery.md
The testing API defines checkCrashRecovery and its options, crash points, effects, failure types, and report. The documentation describes how to run and interpret the check.
Simulate crashes and validate resumed runs
src/crash-recovery.ts, src/crash-recovery.test.ts, docs/persistence.md
The check simulates crashes after log appends and during effects, resumes from the durable log, and compares effects, requests, outcomes, and replayed state. Tests cover crash points, store failures, actor sources, and host events.

If the journal fails while a plain actor is finishing, its effect can still run and may run again after a resume. Restored child completions and crash-time usage accounting also have unresolved concerns. Resolve the finishing-effect gate before merging.

Do not use undefined to skip request comparison after fingerprinting fails.

toJsonValue creates a new object, so deleting runId does not mutate the live request. It also drops function-valued properties while retaining the surrounding object, so ordinary tool functions do not make the fingerprint undefined.

A request with a throwing toJSON() can still make requestFingerprint return undefined. If both executions produce undefined, the request-changed comparison reports no difference. Preserve a distinct fingerprinting failure or report it explicitly instead of treating two unavailable fingerprints as equal.

Report each restored child completion only once.

For nested restored actors, an ancestor scan can queue a completion before the child’s own startup scan queues it again. If the parent stays in the same state, an onDone handler can run twice and change the result or repeat its actions.

Deduplicate completion delivery across scans, and add a regression test with an active nested parent and a finished child.

The harness does not call reset before a resume, so fake state can carry over from the crashed run. Clarify this in the documentation and JSDoc.
