Description

Calling an unregistered toString hook throws, and registering constructor or __proto__ misroutes callbacks. Store hooks and deprecations in null-prototype dictionaries in both classes, including after removeAllHooks. Use the same safe dictionaries in flatHooks and mergeHooks so bulk registration, removal, and merging retain those names. Field initialization preserves the existing bundle-size limits.

Resolves #173.

Checks

Eight new direct-hook cases fail on unchanged main; six bulk-helper cases fail before the review fix. All 58 tests pass, including existing bundle-size limits, with lint, formatting, type checks, and build passing. Initial verification took 126 seconds and review verification took 51 seconds on Node 24.19.0.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed hook handling for names that overlap with built-in JavaScript object properties, including toString, constructor, and __proto__.
    • These hooks can now be registered, invoked, unregistered, and reused after clearing all hooks. Bulk hook operations and merged or flattened hook results also preserve these names correctly. Calls and cleanup behave consistently for colliding names, including when no matching hook has been registered.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Hookable and HookableCore now use null-prototype hook registries. The flatHooks and mergeHooks utilities also create null-prototype objects. Regression tests cover hook names that collide with Object.prototype.

src/hookable.ts, src/utils.ts, test/hookable.test.ts
Hookable and HookableCore initialize hook registries as null-prototype objects. Hookable also resets its registry to a null-prototype object in removeAllHooks. flatHooks and mergeHooks create null-prototype objects. Tests cover colliding hook names, registration, invocation, removal, reuse after removeAllHooks, deprecation, and merging.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in src/hookable.ts: Hookable now initializes _hooks and _deprecatedHooks as null-prototype objects at declaration; the constructor’s explicit assignments for these and its other optional state fields were removed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/hookable.ts: removeAllHooks now resets _hooks to a null-prototype object instead of an ordinary object.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/hookable.ts: HookableCore now initializes _hooks as a null-prototype object at declaration; its constructor and ordinary-object initialization were removed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/utils.ts: flatHooks now defaults hooks to a null-prototype object instead of an asserted empty object.

Preserve ordinary prototypes on the exported utility results.

flatHooks and mergeHooks are public exports. Before this change, both returned ordinary objects, and the declared return type does not indicate a null prototype. When a result has no hook named hasOwnProperty, a consumer that calls result.hasOwnProperty(...) can now get a TypeError. Restore ordinary objects and define __proto__ as an own property. Keep an own-property check in mergeHooks so names such as toString and constructor continue to merge correctly.
